- Dry Ingredients
2 1/2 cups (320 g) all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt - Wet Ingredients
1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
1 large egg
2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp almond extract (optional) - Decoration
Gel food coloring (pink, blue, yellow, lavender, or other pastel colors)
1/4 cup (40 g) pastel sprinkles
Instructions
- 1. Mix dry ingredients
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- 2. Cream butter and sugar
- In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes).
- 3. Add wet flavors
- Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using), mixing until well combined.
- 4. Combine wet and dry
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet, mixing just until combined. Do not overmix.
- 5. Divide dough
- Divide the dough evenly into 3 or 4 portions, depending on how many colors you want.
- 6. Tint dough
- Tint each portion with a different pastel gel food coloring, kneading gently until color is evenly distributed.
- 7. Form ropes
- Roll each colored dough into long ropes (about 12 inches/30 cm long).
- 8. Twist and log
- Gently twist the ropes together, then roll into a log. Slice the log in half if it becomes unwieldy.
- 9. Chill dough
- Wrap the dough log(s) in plastic wrap and chill for at least 2 hours, or until firm.
- 10. Preheat oven
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- 11. Slice dough
- Slice the chilled dough into 1/4-inch (0.6 cm) thick rounds. Place on prepared baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart.
- 12. Add sprinkles
- Top with pastel sprinkles if desired.
- 13. Bake
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until edges are just beginning to turn golden. Do not overbake.
- 14. Cool cookies
- Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Zusatztipps für die Zubereitung
Always use gel food coloring to maintain vibrant pastel hues without changing dough consistency. For a charming marbled effect, twist the ropes loosely and avoid overmixing. Wrapping the dough tightly and chilling thoroughly ensures easy slicing and maintains the swirl pattern.
