Hojicha Affogato Vanilla Ice Cream (Print version)

Creamy vanilla ice cream meets roasted Japanese hojicha tea in this elegant 10-minute dessert.

# What you'll need:

→ Ice Cream

01 - 2 large scoops vanilla ice cream, preferably premium or French vanilla

→ Tea

02 - 2 teaspoons hojicha loose leaf tea or 2 hojicha tea bags
03 - 1 cup water

→ Optional Toppings

04 - Toasted sesame seeds
05 - Crushed roasted nuts such as almonds or pecans
06 - Sweetened red bean paste

# Directions:

01 - Bring 1 cup of water to a boil, then let it cool for 1 minute. Pour over hojicha tea leaves or use tea bags in a teapot or heatproof cup. Steep for 2 to 3 minutes, then strain or remove tea bags.
02 - Place a large scoop of vanilla ice cream in each serving glass or bowl.
03 - Immediately pour half of the hot hojicha tea over each scoop of ice cream for dramatic effect.
04 - Add optional toppings if desired. Serve immediately with a spoon.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • It feels like you're doing something impressive when really you're just five minutes away from dessert.
  • The roasted, almost caramel-like flavor of hojicha against cold, creamy vanilla is genuinely addictive.
  • It's dramatic enough to serve guests but simple enough that you won't stress about timing.
02 -
  • The water temperature really matters—if it's boiling when it hits the tea, you'll get tannins and bitterness instead of that smooth, roasted warmth.
  • Serve this right away because the magic is in that moment when the hot tea meets the cold ice cream, and waiting even a couple minutes changes the whole experience.
03 -
  • Keep your ice cream scooper in a glass of warm water between scoops so the ice cream releases cleanly instead of tearing.
  • If you can't find hojicha, you can use a good quality jasmine green tea or even a light roasted oolong, though the flavor profile will shift.
